About the location:
“The Seelye Mansion in Abilene, Kansas, built in 1905, offers a glimpse into early 20th-century luxury and innovation. The Georgian style mansion was designed by prominent Kansas architect, James C. Holland, to be the residence of Dr. and Mrs. A.B. Seelye. Its interiors feature exquisite furnishings, many sourced from the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, giving visitors a rare chance to experience the refined lifestyle of that era.
One of the mansion's most captivating features is its early use of technology. The home includes Edison light fixtures, original telephone-intercom system, and even a rare bowling machine in the basement. The 1921 Steinway piano, exquisite Haviland China dishware, and mahogany woodwork further highlight the home’s elegance and modernity, making it a fascinating blend of luxury and technology.
Today, the Seelye Mansion is preserved as a historic house museum, allowing visitors to explore its rich legacy. The museum located to the rear of the mansion remains full of original artifacts of Dr. Seelye's patent medicine company, including many samples of the original medicines. Also preserved is much of the manufacturing equipment giving insight into the early pharmaceutical industry. This architectural treasure serves as a vivid symbol of Kansas's entrepreneurial and innovative spirit in the early 1900s.
Today the mansion is owned and operated by the Historic Seelye Mansion Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization governed by a Board of Directors, and eligible to receive tax-deductible donations.”
