From PrairieLore:
The Meadow Drake is a tiny species of dragon that protects and pollinates the wild aquilegia plant (known colloquially as ‘Columbine’).
Although quite common, the meadow drake is rarely seen by humans due to its amazing ability to camouflage itself among the wildflower’s foliage, its head resembling the unopened columbine buds and the scales along its back mimicking the color and shapes of the plant’s leaves.
Experts theorize that the meadow drake is a much smaller descendent of the Rocky Mountain Cave Dragon that has been witnessed dwelling in gold, silver & Diamond mines as late as the 1800’s before being driven north by the American Gold Rush and the use of dynamite during that era.
As with most of the lore surrounding magical fae creatures, these theories are impossible to prove or disprove because meadow drakes are notoriously difficult to spot, let alone to capture and observe. So the meadow drake remains an illusive enigma in the world of botanical folk lore. “
